The webinar will introduce the new NHSE Genomics Network of Excellence project on Severe Presentations of Infectious Diseases.  This project brings together metagenomic sequencing of organism found in respiratory and sterile site specimens, and investigation of human immunological response.  The project is anticipated to be launching pilots in 10 ICUs across England in late 2024 and this webinar will introduce pharmacists to the technology used, potential benefits and how pharmacy can become involved in Clinical Metagenomics.  It will be suitable for pharmacists working in critical care or antimicrobial stewardship, as well as those with an interest in genomics.

This webinar will be of particular interest to pharmacy professionals working in critical care or infectious diseases/microbiology, and those with an interest in applications of genomics, in secondary care.

The aim of this webinar is to introduce infection specialist and critical care specialist pharmacists to the concepts of clinical metagenomics and sequencing of respiratory samples immune function in the context of severe infectious diseases.

After this webinar, attendees should be able to:

  • Describe the aims of the NHSE Genomics Service Network of Excellence project IN Severe Presentation of Infectious Diseases
  • Discuss potential benefits of sequencing technology in infection and immunity, and how this could change the future of treating critically ill patients with respiratory infections.
  • Outline the role of the pharmacy team in delivering genomics and clinical metagenomics in practice, including clinical studies relating to this.
